The task

Using my skills in Product Design, UX, and UI I tasked myself with developing an MVP. I wanted to explore a self-directed challenge by identifying an area of digital design that I believed needed improving.

The problem

Web browsers such as Safari and Google Chrome offer outdated bookmarking features:

  • Users regularly quit their web browser without bookmarking tabs, leaving valuable research to be forgotten.

  • Users are often limited to only 1 way of organising bookmarks – by placing them in browser folders.

  • Users are unable to share web pages with ease by being forced to save URLs in documents or share them via whatsapp / email / text.

  • Friends, couples, and colleagues are unable to collaborate efficiently when gathering and compiling content from the web.

The research

Using popular browsers such as Google Chrome, Firefox and safari I analysed the UI and usability of the bookmarking features.

Creating drafts

I began testing and developing the web-app architecture by sketching wireframes.

It was important for me to ensure that all the needs of the users could be met, using minimal friction points, such as:

  • Auto-filling content from pasted URLs.

  • Visibility of the time and date that the bookmark was saved.

  • Improved organisation and visibility of saved URLs.

  • The option to add notes to each saved URL.

Lo-fi wireframing

Using the hand sketches I began wireframing the web-app in Figma.

These lo-fi wireframes served as the foundation for understanding the limitations placed on the content.

Lastly, I was able to establish the UI, branding, typographic hierarchy, and content structure.

The final product

Users save all of their favourite web pages in one place

Link-it is a web-app that allows users to effortlessly save and view all of their favourite web pages in one place.

Consider Link-it the Pinterest of URL bookmarking.

Users have a dedicated pinboard containing all of their saved content.

Login or create an account

The Link-it web app allows users to easily generate an account using their Google credentials. Alternatively, users can generate an account using a chosen email and password.

A dedicated pinboard

When new users log in for the first time they find an empty board, ready to be populated with their favourite content from the web.

Save any URL

Users begin populating their pinboard by clicking on the ‘Save URL’ button.

Auto-generated content

When users copy and paste the URL to save a new link, the ‘Autofill’ option is automatically selected.

This means that from the chosen URL an automatic title, link description, page logo, and preview image are populated.

Users can manually save the content to a specific folder or add a hashtag that allows them to efficiently categorise their content.

Organise by hashtags and save to folders

When saving web pages, users can organise content by using folders.

Users can also see URLs which they have allocated to a specific hashtag.

Apply filters

Users can quickly search through their saved web pages by applying filters.

Filters can be a combination of both folders and hashtags.

Hover to see link description

Users can view the entire link description by hovering their cursor over the body text.

Visit a URL

Users simply hover their cursor over the title and click in order to open the saved URL in a new browser tab.

Edit and delete saved links

Users can edit and delete their saved content.
